THE dispersal of the Willenhall herd of pedigree Holsteins on behalf of Roger and Lin Edwards, Bettisfield, near Whitchurch, which was due to be held at Shrewsbury market was rearranged as an online auction.
The herd was re-lotted into social groups of approximately 10 animals, and viewing days were set for individuals to view the herd, one at a time to comply with social distancing.
This first online dispersal proved to be a great success with 23 buyers registered.
Making the top price was the Elite group made up of some of the finest individuals of the herd. These sold for £2,200/head to A.J. and L.A. Duthie and Son, Newport, who also secured a dry cow group at £1,575/head, an October calving group at £ 1,732.50/head and a group of milking heifers at £1,522.50/head.
The summer and autumn calving cows were in high demand selling to £1,575/head.
Other volume buyers included William Seabridge, Stoke on Trent, who bought seven lots, including a group of cows due in May at £1,575/head, a group due in October at £1,522.50/head and cows due December at £1,365/head. Also going on the lorry was a group of February calved heifers at £1,575, another group of fresh heifers at £1,732.50/head and two groups of in-calf heifers, the first at £1,575/head and second at £1,470/head.
Richard Bowdler, Ellesmere, secured a group of 10 fresh calved cows at £1,732.50/head.
Demand was especially high for the in-calf heifers due late autumn/ early winter which regularly sold at £1,500/head.
