Young farmer stunned by 80kg birth weight of Limousin calf

The latest edition to the herd, a Limousin bull calf appropriately named Jumbo, topped the scales at 80kg.

Sam Ainsworth, 25, an assistant herdsman at Salwick Hall Farm, Preston, said it had come as a shock as the average calf weight from the last three born on the farm was about 45.3kg.

He said: “We could not believe it at all. It was one hell of a calf.

“I saw a pair of feet on Friday morning so put my hand in but I had to call the vet. Mother and calf are both doing well and I will be surprised if I see another calf as big in my time.”

The calf was delivered on Friday (September 8) by caesarean section and Mr Ainsworth said he was pleased with the progress.

He said as the third calf for the home-bred cow, it was much bigger than anything he had expected and suspected it may have topped any recent Limousin calf record.

Character

“Surprisingly the calf was up and bobbing about carrying its own weight within a few hours, and after a good few doses of colostrum milk from mum and some TLC Jumbo is doing well,” added Mr Ainsworth.

“He is certainly going to be remembered for a long while. He is a character already, always first up at feeding time and does like bobbing about in his pen in fresh bedding.

“Credit has to be given to Ribble Vets who once alerted were here within half an hour, and Hannah the vet did a great job before, after and during the operation and we are all very pleased with the outcome.”
