A rare opportunity has arisen for a Senior Gardener/Horticulturist to join a beautiful private estate on the Dorsetshire/Somerset border, approximately 12 miles from the Dorset/Devonshire coast. The position requires applicants to have excellent horticultural knowledge in order to effectively contribute to the restoration of this stunning historic garden. The gardens have a lot to offer the right candidate, with job satisfaction and challenge guaranteed in equal measure, as well as the reward of working for a generous and personable client who is genuinely passionate about the estate. The large gardens and surrounding meadows play host to numerous majestic mature trees (one of which is particularly well known within the Arboricultural community) and an enticing array of other garden features each laid out in their respective garden ‘rooms.’ The property contains a developing kitchen garden, a very large greenhouse, parterres, mixed bed/borders, expansive manicured lawns and hedges and an historic collection of magnolia, rhododendrons, acers and other acid-loving plants. Significant proportions of the estate are currently being redesigned by a prominent garden designer, from whom you will benefit from taking some direction in terms of the overall development plan. Applicants should be very confident in their horticultural abilities in terms of seasonal practices, plant identification skills and the effective use of plants in relation to their environment. The successful candidate will be working hands-on alongside an existing gardener, with help provided on a temporary basis by the gamekeeper. Applicants should therefore also possess good physical fitness and the ability to operate garden machinery efficiently and safely. Candidates should have an understanding of kitchen gardening, plant propagation and glasshouse work, as these aspects will require your input in order to realise their full potential once more. An academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 or equivalent is desired, as well as demonstrable experience in a similar role. Spray certificates (PA1/6) are desirable as is a degree of arboricultural knowledge or interest. It is essential that applicants hold a full driving licence as the estate is situated in a rural location. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, qualified, energetic and skilled gardener/horticulturist with a positive attitude and friendly character. A generous salary is offered in addition to a discretionary bonus, and accommodation on site, paid for by the client. The accommodation includes two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, a small sitting room and large courtyard. The ‘stable flat’ is unfortunately not suitable for children or pets, but would suit a single person or couple looking for a classic English garden estate in a beautiful part of the country.
