ABOUT: Dylan Ross

WITH a host of best in show titles under his belt, Dylan Ross knows a thing or two about preening poultry for a show outing.

 

Based in Samlesbury in Preston, Dylan and his father David exhibit under the trading name D. and D. Ross and have taken supreme poultry championships at shows up and down the country.

 

This year, Dylan’s white Pekin pullet has clinched best in show honours at both Great Yorkshire and Royal Cheshire.

 

The pair have previously won at the National Poultry Show held in Telford, where over 3,000 entrants pen up to compete.

 

At home around 150 birds reside on a plot of land behind the house, which Dylan shares with his dad, his mum Janet and sister Grace.

 

David and Dylan currently keep Pekins, Dutch Bantams, Barbu d'Anvers and Modern Game, with a distinct focus placed on the breeding programme for the Pekin breed.

 

“The successful pullet I have shown this season is a homebred”, says Dylan. “I am selective with breeding choices in order to adhere as closely as possible to the breed standard.

 

“I like to see a Pekin with a high cushion and a good, angled tilt on the frame. The feet must be nice and yellow, and the eye must be a red, orange colour. There 12 standard colours within the Pekin breed and each is unique. When judging a white Pekin, the rule book states the bird must be ‘snowy white’, and not exhibit any black spots or discolouring, which is why correct pre-show preparation is vital.”
