A temporary Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) for the sprout inhibitor, chlorpropham (CIPC) has been given approval.
The new temporary level of 0.4 mg/kg in ware potatoes is expected to take effect around summer 2021 after a European Union Standing Committee vote.
Until then the current 10.0 mg/kg MRL will remain in force.
The use of CIPC for use as a potato sprout suppressant was banned this year, but chemical residues are present in many storage facilities. The new MRL will provide some reassurance to farmers.
Ware potatoes imported from outside the EU will soon have to meet the temporary MRL too.
